This consultation has now concluded - thank you to everyone who took part.

Exciting changes are on the horizon - the Three Lane Ends junction in Castleford is set for a major upgrade, backed by a £555,000 investment from the Active Travel Fund (ATF5).

A family using a toucan crossing

Wakefield Council, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, successfully secured this funding to improve walking and cycling in the local area. Our goal is to enhance your journey and create welcoming, accessible spaces. We wish to make it easier for everyone to reach the Castleford to Wakefield Greenway and Three Lane Ends Primary Academy, while sharing the space safely and comfortably.

The plan is to install:

  1. Three new Toucan crossings at the A639/A6032 Methley Road junction
  2. A section of new two-way segregated cycle lane, and a new footway next to it. This will create a link between the Castleford to Wakefield Greenway and the Methley Bridge / Whitwood Mere areas of Castleford
  3. New sections of shared use footpath and cycleway. This includes links towards the school

These improvements will:

  • Provide continuous safe access to the Castleford to Wakefield Greenway for all users, and to the nearby Three Lane Ends Academy
  • Encourage more people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling, especially for shorter journeys, contributing to a more active lifestyle
  • Reduce car emissions, as more people walk, wheel and cycle, and leave their car at home

Thank you for your your questions.

1: No guard railing will be removed as part of this project. The reason being is that Barnsdale Rd (A639) experiences high volumes of traffic and is therefore appropriate to retain the guard rail on the grounds of highway safety.

2: A Toucan Crossing enables cyclists to cross the road at exactly the same time as pedestrians. Signal stages/phases therefore are not changing.

3: Cyclists will transition from on – carriageway to the shared use path via newly installed dropped crossings. These dropped crossings will be accompanied by lining & signing where appropriate in accordance with LTN 1/20.
