Have Your Say

We wish to make it easier and safer to travel between Shipley and Bradford city centre, and we want to hear your views.

Bradford Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority have developed proposals that we believe will help you to travel in a more sustainable, more active way.

While we fully appreciate that some residents need their car to get around, we want to ensure that you have more choice about how you travel. Our ideas mean you can still drive if you need to, but will also support you if you would like to travel more by walking, by cycling and by getting the bus.

Below is more information about our proposals. Plus you can download our leaflet here. Once you have read all the information, please let us know what you think. Your feedback will inform the next round of designs.

The Area

The area of the scheme includes the length of A650 Manningham Lane, Keighley Road and Bradford Road. Also a section of A6037 Canal Road, Valley Road and a section of A6038 Otley Road.

Our Aims

We wish to improve how people travel in this area, and that any changes would:

  • Improve travelling between Bradford and Shipley, including getting to work and getting to school / college

  • Improve public transport with new bus lanes and better bus stops, for better bus reliability

  • Upgrade your walking and cycling experience, encouraging more people to walk or cycle rather than using private cars

  • Increase road safety for all

  • Reduce pollution, and improve air quality

Our Proposals

This scheme has been in development for several years. We have had to rethink the project after changes in things like inflation (increased costs) and updated government policies.

You took the time to tell us what you think back in 2020. Take a look at our You Said, We Did for a summary of your concerns and how we're addressing them.

Our revised proposals will look to address previous concerns in a different way, by making it easier and safer to choose to walk, cycle or catch the bus.

We wish to give you more choices about how you travel, and this will hopefully result in fewer people needing to drive their car.

The work to naturalise Bradford Beck is continuing as planned, click here to find out what's happened so far (opens in new tab).

Manningham Lane and Hamm Strass

We wish to improve your travel between Hamm Strasse and the A6177 Junction on Queens Road / Marlborough Road. We want to make Manningham Lane a bit less car dominated and improve the reliability of buses, while making sure you can still visit businesses along the route easily. We also want to improve air quality and road safety.

Our proposals are to:

  • Add in a bus gate. This means you would no longer be able to travel north from Spring Bank Place to Queens Road in a private vehicle. You would still be able to access businesses along Manningham Lane

  • Add in a 'no right turn' restriction from Queens Road to Manningham Lane

  • Install cameras to enforce parking rules

Potential diversion routes

Because it would mean you would no longer be able to travel north from Spring Bank Place to Queens Road in a private vehicle, and there would be no right turn from Queens Road on to Manningham Lane, we recommend alternate routes to travel instead.

If you would usually travel up Manningham Lane to Frizinghall and Lister Park area:

  1. Head up Westgate towards Whetley Hill

  2. Turn right onto Carlisle Road

  3. Turn left onto Manningham Lane

If you would usually travel up Manningham Lane to Shipley area:

  1. Head towards Drewton Road / Hamm Strasse

  2. Turn left onto Canal Road

  3. Slight left onto Canal Road and continue to follow A6037

Here is a map of the diversions:
