The proposals

What are you trying to achieve with the A641 Improvement Scheme?

The A641 Improvement Scheme aims to make travelling in and around Brighouse safer, easier and more reliable for everyone – whether you drive, walk, wheel, cycle or use public transport.

    The plans will:

    • Make car travel more resilient with a new canal bridge, better road layouts, and improved junction designs

    • Make the network safer for all road users by adding new crossings and redesigning busy junctions

    • Provide better options for walking, wheeling, cycling and bus travel, giving people more choice in how they get around

    • Support new housing and business growth by ensuring the transport network is ready for future demand

    • Create a healthier, more vibrant community by improving connections and public spaces

These improvements also link with other local projects, helping Brighouse and South East Calderdale grow sustainably.

What stage is it at / what’s next / when will it be delivered?

The project is currently in the detailed design phase, which is the final design stage before constructionWe will be completing our final versions of detailed designs in 2026, and we will take your feedback on board. We hope to start construction in 2027.

What are the main changes happening because of the A641 Improvement Scheme?

    The key changes happening include:

    • Junction improvements and simplified road layouts to improve the flow of traffic

    • A new off-road greenway route for walking, wheeling and cycling using an old railway line

    • A safer, better-connected walking, wheeling and cycling network

    • Safer crossing points and junctions

    • A new bridge on the A643 over the River Calder for people walking, wheeling, cycling and driving

    • Better bus priority

    • Attractive public spaces in Brighouse town centre

    Will this help with traffic?

Yes. The A641 Improvement Scheme is designed to make journeys in and around Brighouse more reliable, better connected and safer for everyone.

For people driving, the scheme includes new road layouts and junction improvements to help traffic move more smoothly through busy areas. The new bridge planned for the west of the town centre will also take vehicles away from the middle of Brighouse, creating more space for people and helping traffic flow more effectively around the town.

At the same time, the scheme will improve options for walking, wheeling, cycling and bus travel, meaning fewer short trips will need to be made by car. This will all work together to create a safer and more balanced transport network.

Will it be safer for walking, wheeling and cycling?

Yes. An important part of these improvements is that it focuses on making travel safer and more appealing for walking, wheeling and cycling. This includes creating new crossings, continuous (unbroken) footways, and new cycle lanes, including a new greenway route and quiet routes.

Funding and decision-making

Will the project definitely go ahead?

The project is still in the planning and design stages, which means it needs to go through further design, consultation, and funding processes before any construction can take place.

Who is responsible for this project?

Calderdale Council is the main organisation responsible for the A641 Improvement scheme.

    How is it being funded?

The A641 Improvement Scheme has a revised total cost of approximately £68.5 million. It is mostly funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Calderdale Council will also use a type of loan (Prudential Borrowing) to cover early costs, which will be repaid by financial contributions from developers building homes in Woodhouse and Thornhills.

Impact on local people

I live/own a business near the proposals, what does this mean?

The A641 Improvement Scheme aims to improve how people move around Brighouse, making journeys more reliable, better connected, and safer for everyone.

For residents and businesses, this means improved walking, cycling, and public transport options, as well as better traffic flow in areas. This may help to increase footfall or provide new travel options for your workforce.
