We are analysing your feedback. We will publish the results here when they are ready.

Please see below for the information presented during the consultation period from October to November 2025.

We are working with Calderdale Council and Bradford Council to improve travel around Brighouse. The A641 is a key route that links Brighouse with Huddersfield and Bradford. We know that, every day, there is a lot of traffic in the area. There isn't currently a safe, connected and accessible route for walking, wheeling and cycling. Bus journeys are also unreliable.

We want it to be easier and safer to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport. We also want to support local businesses, help create healthier and fairer communities and reduce pollution. We will do this by improving connections to communities around Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse, and Woodhouse to make it easier and safer for everyone to get around.

These improvements are part of a much wider plan to support growth in local housing and jobs, improve public spaces, and help Brighouse grow sustainably. This will make our community an even better place to live, work, and visit. This project will help us to make sure our transport network works now, and in the future.

What are the benefits?

We have designed this project with our communities to achieve:

  • Accessible travel for everyone
  • Easier journeys to work, school and other important places
  • Junction improvements and the new bridge will make the transport network more reliable
  • Buses will have increased priority and be more reliable
  • A more direct, well-defined route between the town centre and train station
  • The improvements will help people feel comfortable and connected moving in and around Brighouse
  • Easier access to walking, cycling, or using public transport will have health benefits
  • More sustainable ways to travel will help the environment
  • The transport network will work better now and for the future, serving new homes, business and jobs

These changes will make southeast Calderdale a more vibrant place where people want to invest, live, work, visit and study.

The UK Government is also investing £19m in Brighouse through the Brighouse Town Deal. Two new housing sites are planned at Woodhouse and Thornhills, and a major new Business Park is planned for Clifton. We have designed these proposals to work well with these projects, facilitate opportunities for the area, and help more people to travel around using local routes and public transport.

What are the proposals?

We have separated our plans into five locations. You can click the links below to view a map of each location:

These improvements will provide:

  • 1.6 kilometres of high-quality protected cycle track
  • 2.2 kilometres of new or improved greenway routes for walking, wheeling and cycling
  • 1.7 kilometres of new or improved paths for walking, wheeling and cycling
  • 330 metres of new bus lanes
  • Two bus priority routes
  • Seven junction improvements
  • 1.7km of quiet routes with low traffic flows and speeds to improve safety
  • 45 new crossings and 8,700 metres² of new or improved footways
  • 17 junctions with unbroken footways
  • One new bridge across the Calder and Hebble Navigation in Brighouse
  • 1,400 metres² of new or improved public spaces
  • 10+ new cycle parking stands

Pickle Bridge Greenway

Click here to view the plan in more detail. Watch the video below to find out more.

We are proposing a new off-road walking, wheeling and cycling route between Lower Wyke Lane and Thornhills Beck Lane to Clifton Road. The Pickle Bridge Greenway will link through Wellholme Park to Brighouse town centre via Clifton Road.

The route will run along an old railway line and will connect with the town centre east improvements where walking, wheeling and cycling journeys can continue.

This route will connect the new housing development at Thornhills to Brighouse.

The route will have seating and rest areas, and link into Wellholme Park. This will help connect people more easily to green space and provide an attractive leisure route for everyone to use.

Key proposed features include:

  • A path made from a smooth, sustainable recycled surface that is suitable for all users, helps rainwater drain naturally and limits the impact on surrounding trees
  • Seating and rest areas along the route, including a viewing point at the existing pond
  • New fencing to make the route feel safe and well defined

We will also provide a new footway along Thornhills Beck Lane. This will give users their own space away from vehicles between the greenway and Wellholme Park.

The footway at Birkhouse Road will be widened and resurfaced to provide a safe and accessible connection to the new Greenway for people walking and wheeling.

Bailiff Bridge

Click here to view the plan in more detail. Watch the video below to find out more.

We’re proposing improvements around Bailiff Bridge to make it safer and easier for people to get around on foot, by driving, with a wheelchair or mobility aid, or by bike.

The plans include:

  • New traffic light controlled crossing points at Bailiff Bridge junction to improve movement for all users
  • New traffic light controlled crossing points on approach to the junction – one south of the junction on Bradford Road and one to the east on Birkby Lane
  • Wider footways
  • A connection between Bailiff Bridge and the new Pickle Bridge Greenway

Brighouse Town Centre (West)

Click here to view the plan in more detail. Watch the video below to find out more.

We are proposing improvements to travel around the western side of the town centre. This will improve the flow of traffic and provide a welcoming gateway to Brighouse for those walking, wheeling and cycling.

The plans include:

  • A new bridge for people walking, wheeling, cycling and driving
  • Walking, wheeling and cycling route improvements
  • Parking changes

A new bridge for people walking, wheeling, cycling and driving

The bridge will connect the A643 between Owler Ings Road and Bridge Road and there will be no weight restriction. This will provide a more direct north-south connection for those driving and will also offer a reliable alternative to the A641 crossing, complementing the Brighouse town centre east improvements, and improving the overall traffic flow in Brighouse.

The bridge will have a carriageway, two cycle tracks separate from the traffic, and two footways.

Traffic light controlled crossing points will be provided for those walking and wheeling at each end of the bridge.

Walking, wheeling and cycling route improvements

We will provide a new connection to the towpath from the northern side of bridge. Sections of the towpath will be resurfaced so it is smoother and safer for all users.

On Bridge Road, Briggate and Owler Ings Road, walking, wheeling and cycling routes will be unbroken across junctions and new zebra crossings will be provided at the Gooder Street roundabout. This will improve priority for those walking, wheeling and cycling.

Bridge Road and Briggate access will change to local motor traffic only and Owler Ings Road will be closed to through-traffic. This will make the existing bridge and surrounding area quieter and more pleasant for walking, wheeling and cycling. This will create a gateway to the new vibrant town centre.

Cycle parking stands will be made available for those wishing to secure their bikes in the area.

Parking changes

We will provide loading and parking bays at Owler Ings Road and stop footway parking here. This will make the area safer and more attractive for all. Daisy Street car park will be rearranged with improved road markings, new disabled bays, new motorcycle parking and electric vehicle charging points. Owler Ings car park will close permanently.

Brighouse Town Centre (East)

Click here to view the plan in more detail. Watch the video below to find out more.

We are proposing improvements on the eastern side of Brighouse town centre to make it safer and easier for everyone to get around. This includes Wellholme Park and Brighouse rail station.

The plans include:

  • Crossing and junction improvements
  • Bus priority improvements
  • Welcoming gateway
  • Walking, wheeling and cycling improvements and changes to street access

Crossing and junction improvements

We’re planning several new traffic light controlled crossings to make it safer and easier for people to get around Brighouse. This will also help improve how traffic moves through busy junctions.

Key proposed crossings include:

  • North of Tesco roundabout – a new zebra crossing will help people cross this busy section of road safely, whether heading to Tesco or back towards the town centre
  • North of Bonegate Road – to provide a safe link to and from Wellholme Park
  • Next to Phoenix Bridge (A643/A644) – to make it easier for all users to cross to and from Wellholme Park
  • Mill Royd Street junction – new traffic light controlled crossings for all users
  • Between Sainsbury’s and the town centre – the roundabout will be replaced with a new layout including safer crossings
  • Into Sainsbury’s – the roundabout will be realigned with new crossings and a cycle track connection towards the town centre
  • Across Ludenscheid Link – a new signalised crossing for cyclists, alongside improvements to the existing subway for those walking and wheeling

Bus priority improvements

We will provide a new bus stop – near Sainsburys – and new bus lanes between Sainsburys and Huddersfield Road in both directions. This will improve bus priority and reliability in the area.

Public space improvements

A new public realm area will create a gateway into the town centre. Improvements will include features such as planting and benches.

Walking, wheeling and cycling improvements and changes to street access

We will provide a new cycling route between the station and town centre. This will mainly be a separate cycle track between the existing footway and carriageway. Some sections will be shared with those walking and wheeling using a widened footway.

We will also widen the existing footway between Tesco and Wellholme Park. This will be shared by those walking, wheeling and cycling. Access to Mill Lane will be changed to walking, wheeling and cycling only.

These changes will allow less confident cyclists to access the town centre without interacting with motor traffic. Cycle parking stands will be made available for those wishing to secure their bikes in the area.

New crossing points will improve the safety and priority of those walking, wheeling and cycling in the area.

Brighouse Rail Station to Woodhouse and M62

Click here to view the plan in more detail. Watch the video below to find out more.

We want to connect the new Woodhouse homes to the rail station and our enhanced transport network.

We will upgrade the existing muddy off-road path connecting Lords Lane to a gravel surface so it can be used year-round.

We will also provide wayfinding signs to help guide people between the new Woodhouse development and rail station.

We are proposing improvements along Huddersfield Road to make the route safer and more pleasant for everyone. This will also better connect residents to Brighouse rail station and town centre.

Plans include:

  • Walking, wheeling and cycling route improvements
  • New and improved crossing points
  • Junction improvements
  • Speed limit change

Walking, wheeling and cycling improvements

A new cycling route will be provided between the station and Toothill Lane - some sections will be shared with those walking and wheeling using a widened footway.

This route will be unbroken across junctions and driveways from Railway Street to Toothill Lane. This will give those walking, wheeling and cycling priority.

Cycle parking stands will be made available for those wishing to secure their bikes in the area.

Crossings improvements

  • New and improved crossings will be provided along the route, including: Shepherds Thorn Lane for current residents and the future Woodhouse development
  • Lyndhurst Grove Road, Armitage Avenue, Daisy Road and Lords Lane to make crossing easier for those walking and wheeling. Northbound bus stops will be positioned near to these.

Junction improvements and speed limit change

Toothill Lane junction will be changed so vehicles are slower and have better visibility at the junction.

The speed limit on Huddersfield Road, from Toothill Lane Junction towards Brighouse town centre, will be reduced from 40mph to 30mph to improve the safety of everyone.
