North Yorkshire 'Transforming Cities Fund' Consultations

Brand new entrances to railway stations, new public spaces linking the station to the town centre and better access to education and employment sites - they're all included in detailed proposals to transform the area around the railway station in three North Yorkshire towns.

North Yorkshire County Council, Harrogate Borough Council, Craven District Council, Selby District Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority have succeeded in a bid to secure a total of £31m for three separate projects in Harrogate, Selby and Skipton town centres from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund.

In each town, a major package of investment will improve opportunities for sustainable travel and link transport hubs with centres of education and employment – all essential to getting back on track after the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a once in a generation chance to totally re-design parts of the town centres, with investment that will help to fire up the engine on the journey to recovery.

We want to know what you think about the proposals and will be hosting a series of online events where you can hear more and ask questions, before completing an online survey.

These transformational projects are scheduled to be completed by 2023.

The proposals for each town include:

Skipton

The early stage proposals for Skipton are about:

• improved access for pedestrians and cyclists from the railway station to the bus station

• improved railway station frontage and access for buses

• improved access to education and employment sites.

Harrogate

The proposals are about significant improvements to transform the area adjacent to the train station and provide better access for both walking and cycling. The key proposed components are:

• Improvements to James Street that will provide a better retail environment to help support the town centre economy

• Public realm transformation of Station Gardens and One Arch

• Provision of enhanced pedestrian and cycling access along Station Parade and East Parade.

Selby

The key proposed components are:

• a new railway station building and links to the town centre, Abbey and nearby bus station

• an improved connection to the town centre through Selby Park

• new walking and cycling links to major development sites, including a new cycle and footbridge over the River Ouse to the Olympia Park

• new one way traffic systems and cycle lanes along Ousegate and Station Road

We want as many people, businesses and organisations as possible to fill in the online survey and help shape the projects for each town.

The consultation is open from Wednesday 24 February to Wednesday 24 March 2021.

To give you chance to find out more about the projects and ask questions, we are holding some online events on the dates and times listed below.
