Normanton Safe Route to School Scheme
Wakefield Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority are working together to make routes to schools safer to walk, wheel and cycle. Plus, we wish to improve safety across the Normanton area.
We are proposing a number of improvements to pedestrian and cycling crossings giving safer access to schools and the local area. Proposals include reducing the speed limit in the area to 20mph, to align with the broader West Yorkshire Vision Zero programme, and replacing damaged speed humps on Wakefield Road.
It is hoped this will help you and others make more active journeys in Normanton. Your feedback on the proposals will play an important role in developing our plans.
The total expected project cost is £1.75million with funding secured through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and subject to business case approval.

Our proposals
We want to enable people to make more journeys by walking, wheeling and cycling in the area by creating a welcoming, safe and accessible space. We would provide safer access by:
- Introducing 20mph speed limit in the area
- New signalised pedestrian crossings on Wakefield Road (outside Newlands Primary School) and Snydale Road
- Upgrading pedestrian crossings in the Normanton area with dropped kerbs and tactile paving. Drainage is also to be reviewed to ensure water is not collected around crossings
- Replacing damaged speed humps on Wakefield Road
- Resurfacing of existing pedestrian and cycle route and solar lighting across Haw Hill Park
- Improved signalised pedestrian crossing on Castleford Road (near Normanton Common Primary School)
- Improved “park & stride” route including new zebra crossing on Cemetery Road
