KirkleesCouncil, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, is proposing changes at Heckmondwike Bus Hub. We’re looking at increasing the capacity for future bus use, improving accessibility, and building better facilities.
To view all updates on this project please visit Kirklees Council website.
In 2021 we asked for your views on proposals for Heckmondwike Bus Hub as part of the Dewsbury–Cleckheaton Sustainable Travel Corridor scheme. Your feedback showed support for the proposals at the Bus Hub, and these are now being progressed to the next stage of design and the planning application process.
The project aims to:
encourage healthier and more environmentally friendly methods of transport
reduce congestion, reliance on cars, and improve air quality
improve bus journey reliability and journey times
improve accessibility and safety
help achieve Kirklees Council’s commitment to net-zero carbon by 2038

The proposals
Following the initial consultation, we are progressing the proposals which received support:
Upgrading the current Bus Hub to a Bus Station, including a new station building with indoor waiting facilities, real-time travel information, and seating
Increasing the bus stands from four to six and creating a new layover bay
Increased outdoor cycle parking
Additional landscaping, including a green roof and green wall
Improved outdoor public areas, including seating and an entrance canopy
Based on the feedback received, and further design and safety considerations, we are also progressing two new proposals:
New accessible toilets including a Changing Places facility
Removal of two disabled and two short-stay parking bays to the north of the site for improved safety around moving buses
If you have any questions about the scheme, you can submit a question or get in touch using the ‘contact us’ details below.
The scheme is funded by the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), a major new programme of transport infrastructure investment. The government funded programme aims to help create a positive change in the way we travel across the region, providing an accessible, attractive, and cleaner alternative to car journeys.

The statutory planning consultation period closes on 7 September 2022 at 11.59pm
Next steps
Once the planning consultation period concludes, the local planning authority will determine the planning application and apply any relevant conditions to be resolved prior to the start on site.
The project team will then work through this process, alongside detailed design and the writing of the Full Business Case. The Full Business Case will be appraised as part of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Assurance Process.
It is envisaged the project will be submitted to Kirklees Council’s Cabinet in the Autumn of this year for approval to proceed to construction.
