Transforming travel between Dewsbury, Batley and Chidswell

Major changes are being proposed for the Dewsbury-Batley-Chidswell area in Kirklees. We want you to have your say on the proposed transport improvements. About the Corridor

The Dewsbury-Batley-Chidswell Sustainable Travel Corridor is a key route for the Kirklees transport network that runs through the heart of West Yorkshire, connecting the centres of Dewsbury and Batley with Chidswell and Tingley.

The A652 Bradford Road is a busy route, experiencing high traffic volumes and delays, particularly during peak periods. This means buses along the route can get delayed, and it is not as easy to walk or cycle as it could be.

Grange Road and Soothill Lane provide key east-west links between Batley and Chidswell, but offer limited opportunities for travelling on foot or by bike, due to high traffic volumes and a lack of dedicated walking and cycling facilities.

We have conducted assessments along the route to find key problems and opportunities. This has resulted in a range of proposals for walking and cycling improvements and bus priority measures between Dewsbury, Batley and Chidswell.

Although journey patterns have changed because of COVID-19, new housing and employment planned in the future means we anticipate congestion to get worse due to higher travel demands. The Chidswell area in particular is planned to experience significant housing growth, which will place increasing pressure on the existing transport network.

These improvements to the Dewsbury-Batley-Chidswell corridor offer an opportunity to improve walking, cycling and bus journeys for everyone. We're hoping to provide a route between Dewsbury town centre and Batley town centre - please see the cycle network plan here.


Our Proposals

The proposals are presented in five zones which split the corridor by geographical area. To see what we're proposing in each zone, you can click on the links below, or go to our 'Maps' section:

Background

Kirklees Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority are working together to deliver improvements which will benefit residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

The project is part of the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme, a major new programme of investment that aims to create a step change in travel across the region. Kirklees Council has secured over £60m of this central government funding which is ringfenced for schemes improving pedestrian, cycle and public transport movements. This investment will also help ‘level up’ the UK economy and redistribute wealth, jobs and investment more equitably across England. This investment forms part of a much wider plan to tackle the climate crisis and deliver a more sustainable future for the region. Approximately £6m is allocated towards the Dewsbury- Batley- Chidswell Sustainable Travel corridor, which forms just one of the transformational projects to be delivered.

It is our ambition to use this investment to:

  • Enable growth by creating more opportunities for people to walk and cycle
  • Improve transport connections giving people better access to jobs, education, healthcare and leisure facilities
  • Reduce the carbon emissions associated with transport to help address climate change

The ambition has informed the following objectives:

  • Upgrading bus stops along the route to provide better passenger information and waiting environment
  • Create an improved and safer environment for people on foot and on bikes
  • Improve air quality by encouraging more people to walk, cycle or take public transport
  • Support nearby major development sites by improving transport connections
  • Improve ‘Rouse Mill Lane Triangle’ to allow safer journeys

Next Steps

Following the close of the public consultation on 2 November, all feedback will be considered as the designs develop and more technical assessment is undertaken. There will be more opportunities to provide feedback on evolving and more detailed plans early next year before we submit a planning application and request funding to begin construction.

    The Dewsbury-Batley-Chidswell Sustainable Travel Corridor Project only covers a small section of Leeds Road - the junction at Grange Road. The issues you highlighted are being addressed by Leeds City Council and Kirklees Council via other proposals/projects.
