Our new Climate and Environment Plan
This engagement has now closed.
We have worked with partners and stakeholders to develop a new Climate and Environment Plan to help us reach our goal of net zero by 2038.
The Mayor’s Big Climate Chat
From 16 November 2023 to 23 March 2024 we launched the Mayor’s Big Climate Chat to engage with you about the climate emergency. You told us what you thought about climate and what changes you wanted to see in our region.
During the Mayor’s Big Climate Chat 1,484 people completed our survey. Most people responded to our survey as an individual and told us about their own experiences and views.
You can visit the Mayor’s Big Climate Chat project page to read more about what people told us.
West Yorkshire’s new Climate and Environment Plan
Since then, we have taken your feedback on board. We have been working on developing a Climate and Environment Plan for our region. The ideas that you shared during the Mayor’s Big Climate Chat have helped to inform our plan.
As we developed our new plan, we needed to hear from organisations that could help us shape our actions and our approach to delivery. We ran a stakeholder engagement from December 2024 to January 2025 to find out what our stakeholders thought about the draft plan and how they could get involved to help us deliver it. We engaged with stakeholders and organisations that have expertise and experience in areas related to our Climate and Environment Plan.
We shared a survey with our stakeholders and ran workshops. In the survey and workshops we asked how the stakeholders felt about our draft Climate and Environment Plan objectives and actions and how they would like to work with us on delivering the plan.
We received 201 responses to our survey. Stakeholders who responded overall agreed with our draft plan and few disagreed. Some of them made suggestions for things they’d like to see added to, changed or removed.
Some key suggestions they made included that we should devise actions which are ambitious but achievable, lobby Government and work in partnership.
The stakeholders also said they wanted to support us to achieve the goals of the Climate and Environment Plan and saw their organisation playing a role. They agreed that we would need effective partnerships across West Yorkshire to achieve net zero.
