The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is working to improve bus stops and shelters across the region through theBus Stop and Shelter Improvements Programme.
This programme aims to improve bus stops and shelters across West Yorkshire and enhancepassenger experience and levels of customer satisfaction. As part of the replacement bus shelters and poles package of this programme,47bus shelters have already been replaced,with a further 152 bus shelters and 600 bus stop poles to be replaced from December 2025.

The Bus Stop and Shelter Improvements Programme is part of our ambition to deliver an integrated and seamless passenger experience as part of the Weaver Network. Our goal for the Weaver Network is to create a leading transport system for our region that helps people get to where they need to go, supports local communities and helps business to thrive. By making sustainable travel better connected and easier to use, we can also help create cleaner air and protect the environment.

Why these bus shelters and poles are being upgraded
We have chosen these bus shelters and poles for replacement based on the following key factors:
Age – we are prioritising older shelters and poles, especially those that are 12 to 15 years old or more, as they are nearing the end of their useful life
Ownership – we're focusing on shelters and poles that are owned by the Combined Authority
Usage – we have looked at how often each stop is used, using internal and bus operator data. Shelters and poles with more frequent departures are being prioiritised.
Fair distribution – we are making sure improvements are spread fairly across all five local authority areas in West Yorkshire
Condition - the current condition of the existing shelters and poles has also been a factor in deciding which ones need replacing
How long the improvement works takes
Bus shelter replacement works normally take two days, during these works the stop may not be in use. Temporary alternative bus stops will be provided in close proximity to the bus stop in question. Work will begin in December 2025, with the full programme of improvements anticipated to be completed by March 2027.

People are at the heart of our ambition to improve connectivity across West Yorkshire. We are committed to working with members of the public to ensure navigation remains clear and accessible. The principles of the core network branding will be incorporated into the Weaver Network approach - this work is currently in the final stages of development.
There will be no changes to the bus stop flags until the new Weaver Network design guidelines are confirmed. As part of the replacement bus shelters and poles package, an initial 40 bus shelters are currently being replaced in a brand-neutral design, but will reuse the current bus stop flags. The branding of these shelters and flags will be updated once the new branding is confirmed.
