A62 Leeds Road

The A62 Leeds Road corridor has been identified as a key route which, through improvements, could relieve congestion, reduce the slow journey time, improve bus, pedestrian and cycle facilities and support the creation of over 1000 jobs. This project is the first phase of improvements proposed for this road. It is expected that engagement on the A62 Cooper Bridge scheme will begin later in 2020. Information about other transport schemes in Kirklees can be found on kirklees.gov.uk/majorschemes

The improvements aim to:

  • Ease congestion, improve journey times and reliability
  • Improve the safety of the road network along the corridor
  • Allow access to land which will provide over 2500 new homes in the area
  • Improve access to existing employment sites and key transport routes, including the M62, helping support the creation of over 1000 new jobs
  • Reduce traffic-related pollution along the corridor
  • Improve pedestrian and cycling facilities to encourage more people to get out and about for recreation and health

We carried out public engagement regarding this project in November 2018 and information can be found here. Since then there have been some changes to the plans and we are now asking for your views.

What improvements are proposed?

The road improvements proposed for the A62 from Huddersfield Town Centre to Old Fieldhouse Lane include the following:

  • a. Northumberland Street / Huddersfield Ring Road / A62 Leeds Road - Convert A62 Leeds Road (Outbound) from 2 to 1 traffic lane, from Huddersfield Ring Road to Great Northern Street. Also convert A62 Leeds Road (Inbound - Huddersfield Ring Road Approach) from 2 to 3 traffic lanes, to provide 2 left turn lanes to Huddersfield Ring Road. Improvements to existing traffic light signals, changes to lane markings, new road signage and improved cycle way
  • b. A62 Leeds Road / Lower Fitzwilliam Street / Gasworks Street- Removal of the existing gyratory road layout (complicated circular road system) and traffic light signals. Replace with new road layout, traffic light signals, lane markings, road signage and lighting. Includes an improved cycle way
  • c. A62 Leeds Road inbound south of Thistle Street - Provide improved cycle way and new road resurfacing, new signs, and road markings with two lanes of traffic into town to improve capacity (changed from one lane in previous design)
  • d. A62 Leeds Road / Thistle Street / Hillhouse Lane - upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road - the pedestrian crossing facilities are upgraded, whilst maintaining existing crossing points
  • e. A62 Leeds Road / Vine Street / Fieldhouse Road - Retention of existing right turn movement into Vine Street and new road resurfacing, new signs, and road markings
  • f. A62 Leeds Road / St Andrew's Road - new signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road
  • g. A62 Leeds Road / Barr Street / Bradley Mills Road - Widening to Bradley Mills approach and reconfiguration of junction to improve vehicular flow/staging and upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road
  • h. A62 Leeds Road / Red Doles Lane / Bradley Mills Road - upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road
  • i. A62 Leeds Road / Old Fieldhouse Lane - upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and make it easier to turn right. Also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road

(the letters a - i correspond to labels on a map of the overall scheme area, which can be found in the plans in the document library)

General road improvements:

  • Upgrade the existing cycle provision to include separate cycle ways and on-road cycle lanes
  • Improvements to bus stops including new shelters, real time information screens, bus boarders and new laybys
  • New road markings, signage, and advanced cycle stop lines at traffic lights
  • New trees and planting

Detailed plans of these improvements can be found in the plans section of this page, or downloaded from our documents library to view in more detail - access to both of these is at the right of this page, or at the bottom if you are viewing on a mobile phone or tablet.

Next steps:
Between Wednesday 4 March and Wednesday 1 April 2020 a second period of public engagement took place on the updated plans.
