The below information was presented during the public engagement period in November 2018. The feedback report can be found here.

Congestion, slow journey times and poor air quality is currently experienced along the A62 Leeds Road, and the result is an inefficient road network. Kirklees Council, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority is working towards a programme of transport improvements across the district that will address these issues and drive economic growth. Visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/majorschemes (link opens in a new page) to find out more.

West Yorkshire Transport Fund

As part of the 'City Deal' between West Yorkshire, York and central government, a £1 billion transport fund has been allocated to the region to increase housing, employment and economic growth. It is this funding that will enable transport improvements to be made along the A62 Leeds Road.

A62 Leeds Road

The A62 Leeds Road corridor has been identified as a key route which, through improvements could relieve congestion, reduce the slow journey time, improve bus, pedestrian and cycle facilities and support the creation of over 1000 jobs. This project is the first phase of improvements proposed for this road. It is expected that engagement on the A62 Cooper Bridge scheme will begin in December 2018.

These improvements aim to:

  • Ease congestion, improve journey times and reliability
  • Improve the safety of the road network along the corridor
  • Allow access to land which will provide over 2500 new homes in the area
  • Improve access to existing employment sites and key transport routes, including the M62, helping support the creation of over 1000 new jobs
  • Reduce traffic-related pollution along the corridor
  • Improve pedestrian and cycling facilities to encourage more people to get out and about for recreation and health

What changes are proposed?

The road improvements proposed for the A62 from Huddersfield Town Centre to Old Fieldhouse Lane could include the following:

  • a. Huddersfield Ring Road / Southgate / Northumberland Street - improvements to existing traffic light signals, changes to lane markings and new road signage
  • b. Leeds Road / Lower Fitzwilliam Street / Gasworks - Removal of the existing gyratory road layout (complicated circular road system) and traffic light signals. Replace with new road layout, traffic light signals, lane markings, road signage and lighting
  • c. Leeds Road / Thistle Street / Hillhouse Lane - upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road
  • d. Leeds Road / St Andrews Road - new signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road
  • e. Leeds Road / Bradley Mills Road / Barr Street - upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road
  • f. Leeds Road / Bradley Mills Road / Red Doles Lane - upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road
  • g. Leeds Road / Old Fieldhouse Lane - upgrade the existing signalled junction to better manage traffic and make it easier to turn right. Also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road

(the letters a - g correspond to labels on a map of the overall scheme area, which can be found in the plans or document library)

General road improvements:

  • Upgrade the existing cycle provision to include separate cycle ways and on-road cycle lanes
  • Improvements to bus stops including new shelters, real time information screens, bus boarders and new laybys
  • New road markings, signage, and advanced cycle stop lines at traffic lights
  • New trees and planting

Detailed plans of these improvements can be found in the plans section of this page, or downloaded from our documents library to view in more detail - access to both of these is at the right of this page, or at the bottom if you are viewing on a mobile phone or tablet.
