How were these stations chosen for improvements?
This initiative is part of Northern Train’s Access for All programme, which is aimed at making its stations more accessible and user-friendly for all customers. These 22 stations were selected as they have the highest number of customers across the 64 Northern run stations in West Yorkshire.
How were the accessibility improvements chosen?
Northern has undertaken surveys at all 64 West Yorkshire stations to identify the improvements needed at each station to ensure that all facilities will meet the current National Rail standards.
Northern reviewed the current facilities against the national standards and disabled user experiences using key scenarios. This information and engagement with the Northern Accessibility User Group have been used to create improvement options for each station.
Subject to availability of funding, the investment priorities are
Northern will continue to engage with the Northern Accessibility User Group throughout the process.
Will you improve all stations within West Yorkshire?
There are 64 Northern run stations across West Yorkshire. Subject to a successful business case, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority will fund the first phase of improvements at 22 of these stations as part of the development of the Weaver Network. This work supports our ambition for the Weaver Network, with transport that’s easy to navigate and simple to use. Unveiled in May 2025 by the Combined Authority, the Weaver Network is the new name and unifying brand for transport in West Yorkshire.
The remaining 42 stations will receive improvements in later phases and will be delivered and funded by Northern.

What standard of accessibility are you trying to achieve?
Northern Trains are working to Network Rail standards and will make sure there is consistent approach to station accessibility across Northern run stations.
Our ambition through the Weaver Network is for transport that’s easy to navigate and simple to use, with services designed so that everyone can travel easily and comfortably. Learn more about the Weaver Network and accessibility in the Combined Authority’s Local Transport Plan.
Why are some stations getting some things and others aren’t?
As part of its Access for All programme, Northern is aiming for all its stations to have consistent accessible facilities. After reviewing the 22 stations in phase one, some of the measures are already up to the correct standards, meaning there is no requirement for them to be replaced or improved.
The delivery process
Who is responsible for delivering the scheme?
Phase one of this programme is being delivered by Northern in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
The Combined Authority works with local councils and businesses to ensure that everyone in our region benefits from a strong, successful economy and a modern, accessible transport network. To learn more about the Combined Authority, visit: www.westyorks-ca.gov.uk.
Who will carry out the improvements work?
Subject to approval of the business cases, Northern will lead on the delivery of the works.
When are the improvements likely to be finished?
Subject to approval of the business cases, works for phase one (22 stations) are planned to start in early – mid 2027 and be finished by summer 2028. This date may change because it is dependent on the specific approvals processes and the availability of funding.
The actual dates of works for each station will be communicated by Northern when they are confirmed.
Will there be any disruption while you do the work?
Some minor disruption may happen during installation, but plans will be put in place to keep this to a minimum and to maintain accessibility to the station where possible. Any disruption at your local station will be communicated in advance and mitigated against where possible.
Funding the project
How could these works be funded?
Subject to a successful business case, phase one of the Rail Accessibility Package will be delivered through funding provided to the Combined Authority by HM Government. The funding for this scheme is known as capital funding; this means it can only be spent on schemes to deliver new or improved infrastructure. The cost of phase one of this package (22 stations) is expected to cost £5 million. The subsequent phases covering the remaining 42 stations are expected to be funded by Northern Trains.
