About the project

Who is responsible for transforming Huddersfield Bus Station?

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (the Combined Authority) works with local authorities, such as Kirklees Council and businesses across the region to create economic growth through infrastructure projects such as this. The Combined Authority is the owner and operator of the existing bus station and is responsible for making the internal improvements. However, the external canopy and car park improvements are the responsibility of Kirklees Council, and together we are working to transform Huddersfield Bus Station.

Why do you need to do something?

The existing bus station needs improvement, and we know that from the first round of consultation undertaken in 2021 that you would like a more attractive, safer and accessible bus station with improved services.

This scheme aims to address this through a transformation of the bus station building and its surroundings, including an improved inside, better accessibility for all passengers and upgraded public entrances and exits.

The bus station is an important transport hub and gateway into Huddersfield Town Centre, providing key connections for residents, visitors, students and workers to access jobs, education, leisure and other essential services.

What is the budget of this scheme?

The improvements to Huddersfield Bus Station project are expected to cost £2million and forms part of a wider package of transport projects to transform the way people travel in and around Huddersfield, including better access between the station and the town centre and forms part of the Huddersfield Blueprint.

Can the money be spent on other things instead of improving the bus station? (e.g. bus services, potholes, littering)

The proposal for a transformed bus station in Huddersfield was part of a competitive bid for funding from the Department for Transport’s ‘Transforming Cities Fund’ (TCF). This funding is given by the Government directly and is ring-fenced for this purpose, so cannot be used for other activities.

How will bus passengers benefit from this project?

To encourage more people in and around Huddersfield to use public transport, the proposals aim to:

    • Provide a better customer experience for Huddersfield Bus Station passengers by upgrading facilities and improving safety

    • Inside and outside spaces will be transformed to make the bus station a modern and attractive gateway to Huddersfield

    • Make Huddersfield Bus Station more accessible for all and better connected with the town centre to increase numbers of people travelling by bus

    • Improve the energy efficiency of the bus station

    • Make the bus station a more secure facility, to improve personal safety and encourage more people to travel by bus

About the proposals

What are the new proposals that you are engaging on?

    Improvements to the passenger experience

    • New seating throughout the bus station with upgraded timetable stands, with modern bus and rail Real Time Information screens

    • New tiling on the floors and walls plus a new ceiling installed

    • Public toilets to be refurbished and relocating the accessible toilet and baby change facilities

    • Changes to the travel centre layout (the full range of travel centre services to remain) and Real Time Information screen

    • Coach stands to move closer to the Market Street exit of the bus station to allow more space for passengers

    • New signage and tactile wayfinding line to be installed – leading to entrances, bus stands and passenger facilities

    • New help points, providing instant remote assistance in an emergency

    • Addition of handrails in Henry Street entrance/walkway

    • New Changing Places facilities providing enough space and the right equipment for people with a range of disabilities and their carers, including a hoist and height adjustable changing bench

    • New quiet room that can be accessed by members of the public who need to get away from busier areas of the bus station

    • Increasing the size of the bus stands making it more accessible to enter and exit the buses. The number of bus stands will reduce to 21 stands to enable this improvement whilst maintaining the same number of bus services by increasing the frequency of their use

    • New planters and new seating under the canopy and ramp area

    Safety and security improvements

    • Bicycle stands under the canopy and covered by CCTV

    • An extended traffic island on Henry Street entrance to improve safety

    • Improved visibility of the concourse from the bigger Bus Station Managers Office

    • Improved CCTV (internal and external) and lighting, including additional glazing to increase natural light

    • New barriers at bus stands to improve safety and accessibility

    • Resurfacing of the carriageway and improving the bus drivers walkway

    • The car park access and stairwells are to be refurbished to make it safer and more attractive

    Energy efficiency and carbon saving

    • New efficient glazing and doors throughout the bus station

    • Green living canopy roof with solar glazing

Why do you charge for toilet facilities?

This is part of wider Combined Authority policy to charge a small fee for the public toilets where possible. This policy is aimed at deterring anti-social behaviour and vandalism in bus stations. Changing this policy is not part of this project.

What are you doing to improve the bus station for disabled passengers?

We have a number of things we want to include to improve accessibility for all passengers:

    • New seating, with clear markings showing the start of the queue for the bus at each stand, modern bus and rail Real Time Information screens

    • New tiling on the floors and walls plus a new ceiling installed

    • Public toilets to be refurbished and relocating the new accessible toilet and baby change facilities

    • The travel centre layout change (the full range of travel centre services to remain) and Real Time Information screen

    • Coach stands to move closer to the Market Street exit of the bus station carriageway to allow more space for passengers

    • New signage and tactile wayfinding line to be installed – leading to entrances, bus stands and passenger facilities

    • Regrading of the main entrance slope to make it more accessible

Will reducing the bus stands effect the number of buses in the bus station?

In the proposals we are reducing the number of bus stands from 25 to 21 stands. We are doing this as it will provide more space for better accessibility whilst maintaining the same number of bus services by increasing the frequency of their use. The number of arrival bays along the Henry Street entrance will remain the same. The coaches that use the bus station will be located by the Market Street entrance.

Is there anything being done to improve integration with bikes/cycle parking?

We are proposing to have new bike/cycle stands under the new canopy outside the main entrance of the bus station. The bus station will also have improved and increased CCTV inside and outside

Will the car park above the bus station be impacted/improved?

As part of the programme the car park access and stairwells will be refurbished. Kirklees Council are also making improvements to car park including structural enhancements, new fire detection system, enhanced CCTV coverage, replacement fire doors, upgraded entrance and exit ramps and lighting, and ramp safety heating to counteract snow and ice. More can be found on the council’s website.

What about people who can’t use the bus or bus station? Will they benefit?

Proposals to improve the bus station, encouraging people to the bus station will promote a shift away from reliance on cars, and towards public transport, walking and cycling. This will reduce congestion and improve air quality by encouraging more environmentally friendly methods of travel.

What do you hope to achieve by making the improvements?

By transforming Huddersfield Bus Station we want to enable more people to use public transport within the town and the wider region, we are aiming to:

    • Provide a better customer experience for Huddersfield Bus Station passengers by upgrading facilities and improving safety

    • Transform the inside and outside spaces of the bus station to make it a modern and attractive gateway to Huddersfield

    • Make Huddersfield Bus Station more accessible for all and better connected with the town centre to increase numbers of people travelling by bus

    • Make the bus station a more secure facility, to improve personal safety and encourage more people to travel by bus

How will the bus station address the climate emergency?

Proposals to improve the bus station, encouraging people to the bus station will promote a shift away from reliance on cars, and towards public transport, walking and cycling. This will reduce congestion and improve air quality by encouraging more environmentally friendly methods of travel.

New efficient glazing and doors will be installed throughout the bus station and an external green living canopy with solar glazing are also part of the proposals.

The scheme is one of several transport improvement projects that will help achieve the Combined Authority and Kirklees Council’s vision of becoming carbon net zero.

Will the work on site impact my bus route?

We are aiming for the bus station to remain open as usual when construction work gets underway with some services including coaches temporarily running from other nearby stops in the town centreWe’ll be working in partnership with Kirklees Council to keep disruption to a minimum with work undertaken in phases and some stands and facilities moving around during the worksAny proposed impacts to bus routes whilst works are being undertaken will be communicated widely and with sufficient notice to allow people to prepare for any changes

About the construction

When will construction begin for Huddersfield Bus Station?

Construction on the bus station is expected to start in 2026, subject to receiving the necessary approvals.

Kirklees Council is also undertaking separate investigative works regarding projects on site and more information can be found on the Kirklees Council website.

Will the bus station remain open during construction?

We are aiming for the bus station to remain open as usual when construction work gets underway with some services including coaches temporarily run from other nearby stops in the town centre.

We’ll be working in partnership with Kirklees Council to keep disruption to a minimum with work undertaken in phases and some stands and facilities moving around during the works. Any proposed impacts to bus routes and bus station facilities whilst works are being undertaken will be communicated widely and with sufficient notice to allow people to prepare for any changes.

Will I still be able to catch my bus at the bus station during construction? Or, will the services move to on-street stops?

This will be reviewed as the project progresses, but we are aiming for the bus station to remain open as usual when construction work gets underway with some services including coaches temporarily running from other nearby stops in the town centre. We’ll be working in partnership with Kirklees Council to keep disruption to a minimum with work undertaken in phases and some stands and facilities moving around during the works. Any proposed impacts to bus routes whilst works are being undertaken will be communicated widely and with sufficient notice to allow people to prepare for any changes.

Will any of the bus station facilities close whilst construction is underway?

The Travel Centre, customer toilets and the security office will need to be shut for part of the construction period, but temporary facilities will be put in place. We will let you know of any changes and clear signage will be around the bus station when that happens.

When with the bus station be finished?

Construction on the bus station is expected to start in 2026, subject to receiving the necessary approvals. And we currently think it will take two years to complete.

What about the works happening at the bus station carpark which Kirklees is leading on?

Kirklees Council are also making improvements to car park including structural enhancements, new fire detection system, enhanced CCTV coverage, replacement fire doors, upgraded entrance and exit ramps and lighting, and ramp safety heating to counteract snow and ice. More details can be found on the Kirklees Councils website

Will the shop and cafes at the bus station be open throughout construction?

We are aiming for all of the shops and cafe the bus station to remain open as usual when construction work gets underway

We’ll be working in partnership with Kirklees Council to keep disruption to a minimum with work undertaken in phases and any bus station facilities whilst works are being undertaken will be communicated widely and with sufficient notice to allow people to prepare for any changes.
