Halifax Railway Station

Calderdale Council, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Network Rail, is working to provide improvements to Halifax Railway Station. The new facilities will include a new two-storey station building, a new town footbridge, improved walking, wheeling and cycling access and the reopening of an historic underpass, allowing access to the eastern side of the station.

The existing railway station is not easily reached form the town centre, and the facilities require upgrading to meet passenger demands and the rail requirements of a modern railway station. The scheme aims to address these challenges and is aligned with Leeds City Region and Calderdale Council strategic priorities that support economic development, regeneration and the use of more sustainable transport methods such as walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.

Benefitting Halifax

  • Transformational change for the Halifax Railway Station area, town centre, and benefits to the wider local authority area
  • An integrated and modern transport facility
  • Better links for walking, wheeling, cycling and bus users with better connection to Halifax town centre
  • A new gateway to Halifax and the north, encouraging greater use of public transport, cycling, wheeling, and walking (Wheeling incorporates many methods for getting around, including using wheelchairs, mobility scooters or walking aids and travelling with a pram or pushchair)
  • Greater economic investment from tourism
  • Helping create investment and economic growth, contributing to an increase in job opportunities
  • Providing solutions which contribute to the sustainability net zero carbon targets for Calderdale Council, Network Rail and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority

Proposed improvements to Halifax Railway Station and surrounding area include:

  • A new waiting lounge inside the station building at both ground and first floor levels, featuring real time journey information boards and providing passengers with a view of the platforms outside. Passengers can choose to wait for trains on the platforms or in the improved waiting lounge facilities
  • Expanded retail options including indoor and outdoor café facilities
  • New and improved toilet facilities, including accessible toilets
  • A new Changing Place (an adapted toilet that has enough space for a wheelchair, a hoist, changing table big enough for adults and a non-slip floor)
  • A new town footbridge to provide walking and wheeling access to the new station building at first floor level. It will provide direct, step free access between the town centre and the railway station
  • Station car parking relocated from the road bridge (proposed for demolition) to Eureka!’s northern car park in front of the new station building, at ground floor level. Spaces will be available for station customers and staff providing disabled and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging bays. The car park will include accessible walkways, well defined bays, improved lighting, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) and a curved design to reduce traffic speeds
  • Reopening the historic underpass to provide step free access from the station to the Hebble Trail. New lighting and CCTV will be installed in the underpass for safety and security
  • Upgraded cycle storage facilities, dedicated walking, wheeling and cycling routes to and from the station and improved access to local cycle routes, including the Hebble Trail and A629
  • Provision of solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof of the new station building, green roof, and air source heat pumps as well as low carbon construction methods

This scheme is being delivered through the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) and West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund (WY+TF) programmes.

TCF is a major new programme of transport infrastructure investment aimed at providing a viable alternative to car journeys. Find out more information at www.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/TCF

In January 2021 we held a public consultation for the Halifax Railway Station design proposals and the feedback gained has helped us to develop more detailed design for the station . We would now like to hear your views on the updated plans for the new Halifax Railway Station and the surrounding area.

Have your say:

Please note: This survey has now CLOSED.
Responses to the consultation survey are being analysed and once complete, a report will be published on this page.

Between Tuesday 23rd November 2021 and Sunday 30th January 2022, we are asking for your feedback on the proposed designs prior to the planning application being submitted. Your views are important, so please take this opportunity to let us know what you think.

Step 1: Have a look at the latest proposals in the pdf attachment [link] on this page.
You can also review our consultation video HERE.

  • Overview plan – what the station and surrounding area will look like
  • Key benefits – what the station will deliver for passengers, local people and the wider area and environment
  • You said, we listened – how your feedback has influenced the designs so far
  • Sustainability/Low carbon – the importance of sustainability within the new station design and delivery of the scheme
  • Heritage – how our designs are respecting Halifax’s history
  • Getting around – access to and around the station
  • Landscape – making the station site green
  • Inside the station - building floor plans and moving around in the station
  • External building details - details of what the outside of the station may look like

Step 2: Tell us what you think by completing our short survey. This will only take around 10 minutes to complete

Next steps

Following the close of the public consultation on Sunday 30th January 2022, all feedback will be considered ahead of the planning application submission in 2022.

To request printed versions of the materials please contact Mott MacDonald, the design consultants, using the details below. We will provide a Freepost envelope to return your completed survey to us.

Completed surveys should be submitted by the consultation deadline on Sunday 30th January 2022, so please allow plenty of time to return your feedback survey.
