The following information was presented during the engagement period 5th October 2023 - 19th November 2023.

Building a prosperous West Yorkshire

We want to make West Yorkshire a place that works for all, and to do so we are developing a new Economic Strategy that will help us serve you better.

Since signing a historic Devolution deal in 2020, West Yorkshire now has an elected mayor with more powers and funding. Devolution gives us the opportunity to develop new ways of working and an economy that works for all. To meet this opportunity, we recently launched the West Yorkshire Plan and now we want your input as we prepare to write a new Economic Strategy.

We are speaking with people across West Yorkshire, including businesses, local authorities, universities, and the voluntary and community sector, to ensure our Economic Strategy meets the aims of the West Yorkshire Plan and delivers for you.

The West Yorkshire Plan (available to download from this page) sets out our vision for 2040: A brighter West Yorkshire - a place that works for all. An engine room of ideas and creativity, where anyone can make a home.

The five missions that we want to achieve for the people and places of West Yorkshire are:

  • Mission 1: A prosperous West Yorkshire – an inclusive economy with well paid jobs
  • Mission 2: A happy West Yorkshire – great places and healthy communities
  • Mission 3: A well-connected West Yorkshire – a strong transport system
  • Mission 4: A sustainable West Yorkshire – making lives greener
  • Mission 5: A safe West Yorkshire – a region where everyone can flourish

Now we are developing an Economic Strategy to set out how we will achieve the vision and missions of the West Yorkshire Plan.

Our Economic Strategy will have a particular focus on Mission 1: a prosperous West Yorkshire – an inclusive economy with well paid jobs. This would mean that by 2040 we will have:

  • A thriving economy where everyone has an equitable opportunity to participate in, and benefit from the prosperity generated
  • Improved living standards, with no child growing up in poverty
  • Good work available for all
  • A diverse and inclusive workforce, where everyone who wants to work can.

We require bold action and new ideas to make the missions a reality.

West Yorkshire is a dynamic economy at the heart of the North, boasting an array of attractions and world class cultural assets. The region’s economic output is worth £60bn. The Economic Strategy will help us serve you better and ensure everyone has a fair access to prosperity.
