This scheme aims to make it safer and easier for people to travel on foot between the bus and train station, while also improving cycle routes.
What is being proposed?
The plans for a £1.5m scheme is being delivered by Kirklees Council as part of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme, aimed at encouraging more people to travel on foot and by bike.
The plans include:
1 - St George’s Street
Improved footway surfacing
Widened footways
Improved signage
New road materials
Closure to motor vehicles (apart from access)
New cycle track
2 - Westgate/Henry Street/St George’s Street Junction
Dual pedestrian and cyclist crossing
Widened footways
Improved bus shelters
Road resurfacing
3 - Upperhead Row
Widened footways
Planting of trees
Relocation of some taxis spaces to Dundas Street
Replacement of parking layby for footway space
Upgraded street lighting
Road resurfacing
Uncontrolled crossing improvements
4 - Dundas Street
New parking laybys
Taxi bays to accommodate the relocation from Upperhead Row
Planting of trees
New road materials
5 - Market Street / Railway Street
Southbound cycle track
Access measures for northbound cyclists
