Bradford Centre - Jacob's Well proposal

Summary

The removal of Jacob's Well roundabout was first consulted on in 2021. Previously, the intention was to remove Jacob's Well roundabout, realign the junction and create an underpass where traffic would be routed. Following a design review, instead of an underpass, a high-quality signal-controlled crossing is now proposed for people who walk and cycle - making it easier to get to the west of the city centre.

The roundabout would still be removed and motor traffic would no longer be able to access Hall Ings. The current pedestrian underpass would be closed as part of these proposals, with the wide, signal-controlled pedestrian crossing being a safer alternative to getting around this part of the city centre.

Hall Ings and City Park - Map C. We are proposing a new supercrossing opposite Morley Street, making is easier and safer to cross between City Park and the cultural quarter. Little Horton lane would be closed to traffic at its junction with Prince's Way, providing a new pocket park. A bus hub is also proposed here, with space for three buses. A bus stop with space for three buses would be added on Godwin Street opposite the junction with Thornton Road. Norfolk Gardens would be closed to traffic at its junction with Bridge Street and a turning circle added for delivery vehicles and the disabled parking provision. The existing taxi rank would be replaced with disabled aprking along both sides of Norfolk Gradens. Hall Ings would have increased taxi provision to replace this. A major new linear park would be added on Hall Ings between Jacab's Well and Bridge Street. This section of Hall Ings would be closed to traffic. Jacob's Well roundabout would be removed and a signal controlled pedestrian supercrossing with a central stopping point added to link the city centre to the cultural quarter. Vehicle access for the Magistrates Court, city park and disabled parking would be retained on an access-only basis. Nelson Street would be closed to traffic at its junction with Hall Ings. A turning circle would be added for taxi pick-up and drop-off.
