Halifax Bus Station Redevelopment

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

Used by 15,000 people every day (pre COVID-19), Halifax Bus Station is a key gateway for people arriving in the town centre.

Developed with Calderdale Council, our proposals aim to deliver a modern fit for purpose facility that complements the surrounding heritage, public realm and urban fabric of Halifax town centre. Built on the same site as the existing bus station, the redevelopment will significantly improve safety, comfort, connectivity and accessibility for bus station users and local people.

The redeveloped bus station will be an important transport hub and gateway into Halifax town centre, providing key connections for residents, visitors, students and workers to access employment, education, leisure and other essential services.

Consultation feedback

We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in our public consultation earlier this year. Your feedback has been extremely valuable in helping to shape our plans.

We received 237 responses to the consultation, which ran between January and February 2020. Following the consultation close, we analysed and considered all of the feedback received and included it in the Statement of Community Involvement as part of the planning application.

We have also produced a summary of the consultation, the responses received and our responses, which you can review by clicking here [external link – opens in a new window].

The proposals

The proposals, which aim to deliver significant benefits for passengers, staff and local people, include:

  • A bus station that can accommodate the predicted growth in travel in Halifax.
  • Separation of bus and passenger movements to improve safety.
  • A new single fully enclosed passenger concourse, with easy interchange between bus services, a safe and secure waiting environment, and level walking routes for all users.
  • Better connectivity to key destinations across the town centre, such as Trinity Sixth Form Centre, Dean Clough, Woolshops and Piece Hall.
  • Increased retail and commercial provision to help to improve the passenger experience.
  • Provision of improved real-time information, including rail services, to better integrate these modes of travel.
  • An ‘electric bus station’ that will allow the introduction of electric buses.
  • A harmonious modern building design that integrates well into the surrounding heritage assets and public realm

The proposals and details of the improvements can be  downloaded here.

What's Happening

Phase 1 of the construction works have started on 05 September 2021. Phase 2 is due to commence on 02 October 2021. The new bus station is estimated to reopen to the public in Summer 2023.

Temporary arrangements include using existing town centre bus stops or, where this is not possible, providing temporary bus stops near the bus station. Works will be coordinated with Calderdale Council’s A629 Halifax Town Centre project and it is intended that Market Street will remain open until after the Bus Station redevelopment is complete.

We will continue to update this webpage as the project progresses.

Next Steps

Halifax Bus Station is partially reopening on Sunday 1st October 2023, with 10 of the 19 new bus station stands, new travel centre and toilet facilities opening to passengers.

Construction work will continue in the area currently occupied by the temporary bus station. The new bus station will be fully open early 2024.

Why are disabled people made to negotiate steps in to the bus area. Why also are the infirm and disabled passengers made to walk around an area that drivers would be able to walk freely yet disabled cannot . It's a disgrace.

Yorkshire Rob asked 7 months ago

Thanks for your question. Disabled people have priority when boarding the buses, please contact a member of the bus station staff if you have any issues.

Regarding the driver’s walk at the temporary bus station, it leads to their staff accommodation and it’s not a public entrance/exit route.

How will jobs for the new bus station be advertised. I'm presuming there will be retail opportunities alongside working for First. Will cleaning jobs go through First or via another company.

    jad64 asked 7 months ago

Thanks for your query. Please refer to the bus operator’s websites (First, Transdev and Arriva) for job opportunities with them.

For cleaning jobs please refer to Carlisle Support Services website.

I sent a message a month ago and you still refuse to answer me. When is Phase 4 starting because you have always said "Summer 2023" but let me tell you what August is the last month of Summer and there's still not a release date so it's not opening any point in the next three weeks which will be September by then

Apparently, construction for this project has been delayed with phase 4 meant to commence as of Sunday 23rd July. It has passed this date so when will it open. It shouldn't be September, which means you would have lied to everyone saying Summer is opening.
